The Kraków Nativity Scenes exhibition in Paris

On 10th December two exhibitions of the Kraków Nativity Scenes from our collection was opened. The exhibition was located in St. Magdalene church in Paris (L`eglise la Madeleine). The first exhibition in the interior of the huge church presented only one crib by Eugeniusz Wołkowicz, but the biggest one – 2.90 meters high, on the second exhibition in the King’s Room under the church, we could see 29 cribs, beginning with the small (49 cm) up to huge ones (2.60 meters). In the entrance hall to the King’s Room, there is the Lajkonik carrying a crib and asking to sightseeing.

This is a work designed by Tadeusz Żmirek in 1985. Together with the Lajkonik, the author showed, in the decorated setting, Kraków’s coat of arms and name of the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków. To the exhibition we have attached a plague with information about the tradition, history and competition for the most beautiful Kraków Christmas Crib. There is also description of each crib (architecture, scene, characters). Both cribs’ presentations were prepared because of 170 anniversary of Catholic Missions in France and homage to Holy Father – John Paul II. Ceremonial opening was chaired by rector of the St. Magdalene parish – priest Pierre Molat, and to the event added splendour attendance of Polish ambassador in France Jan Tombiński, Director of Polish Institute - Jadwiga Czartoryska, head of Madeleine 2000 foundation Pierre Jacques Goujon and other eminent guests.

The exhibition will be opened until 29th of January 2006. The exhibition has been successful since the first day the all the time been crowded. Everyone, with interest, admired Kraków’s Cribs. We hope that for the next two moths the exhibition will be seen by many French people and many tourists visiting Paris.
