A museum cannot be just an institution closed inside its buildings. Within the museum’s activities there should be as well collecting historical objects, related to the tradition, as presenting these objects to as many people as possible. But what does it mean in practice?
Unfortunately not every one of us would like to see any of our branches, whether because of lack of free time or just don’t need this. That is why on the list of our activities there are many events arranged by us which, literally speaking, go outside to the street and put Kraków’s citizens and tourists in a position, which they have to join the game in.
Whole year round is full of events which interlard present days with a little bit of the past.
First Thursday, after the Corpus Christi holiday, is a chance to see frolics of the Zwierzyniec small horse called Lajkonik in a company of drafters, bands and the citizens paces a traditional route from the Municipal Waterworks to the Main.
A couple of days later, in the Main Square too, there is an official enthronement of the Marksmen King – in the Brotherhood members’ procession there are winners of the competition for the Little Marksman King too. The youngest Marksmen masters are selected during the competition in the Marksmen Guild headquarter – Celestat.
In the summer season we would like to invite you to the Barbican – Saturday’s struggles of knights brotherhoods help us to understand difficult, but colourful knight’s culture. Each knight’s competitions draw funs of the middle ages.
In autumn, similarly to the night on the museums, is a day of “open doors”. This day we open our museum’s gates to show our guests, usually hidden secrets. The only chance to become convinced is all night long visiting our museum.
In September, we arrange a memorial day in honour of the victims of the Gestapo. In the Pomorska Street branch we think about those who died in torments of the War.
The calendar year ends with a Christmas Crib’s competition and the post-competition exhibition. Since 1937 excluding short break during 2nd World War, the jury of the competition, on the first Thursday of December, have selected the most beautiful cribs from among others brought on the Main Square, near to the Adam Mickiewicz monument. Post-competition exhibition is opened until end of February and is the most frequently visited exhibition of the museum.
Moreover we arrange Kraków’s Museums’ Football competition and the museum employees’ excursion. These are events where guests from outside the museum are welcome as well. We aspire to have many new friends, not only people learning the history of Kraków, but also people having fun from joining in efforts of reviving old traditions and customs. This is what we would like you invite for.
