| Roman Kochanowski - Municher from Kraków |
| Opening of the exhibition on April 29th at 12:00 in the Hipolit House (temporary exhibition gallery), 3 St. Mary’s Square. We would like to invite you to the Hipolit House for the exhibition Roman Kochanowski – Municher from Kraków. As a part of the project of presenting in our Museum the histories of Kraków’s artists, we would like to approach a person of famous painter of the turn of the 19th and 20th century – Roman Kochanowski. He was born in Kraków in 1857. In years 1873-1875 he studied in the Fine Arts School in Kraków. He was taught drawing by Władysław Łuszczkiewicz, foundations of landscapes’ painting by Henryk Grabiński. In 1875 we went to Viennese Fine Arts Academy to continue studies under the guidance of Eduard Lichtenfels. He graduated the academy being awarded with a golden medal. In spring 1881 we went to Munich. He used to live and work there the rest of his life. He was in a circle of friendship together with Polish artists – Munichers, and the most Alfred Wierusz-Kowalski and Piotr Stachiewicz. He used to regularly present his paintings on great international exhibitions. His paintings were exhibited in Berlin, Vienna, London, Salzburg, Kraków, Warsaw and Lvov. He was a member of the Munich Kunstverein and Kunstlergenossenschaft, and also Parisian Internationale des Beaux-Arts et des Lettres. The time of 80s and 90s was a period of the greatest successes of the artist. Critics used to very favourable comment his landscapes, the landscapes which he used to derive themes from his frequent trips to Poland for. He mainly used to paint Kraków’s and Chobienice’s in Major Poland surroundings. These are places he used visit very often, coming to see his friends – Mielżyński family. Main subjects of his landscapes were trees, village cottages, rivers’ banks, swamps, meadows, forests in autumn, roadside willows, flocks of gooses. He used to paint in a very realistic way, very carefully composing the painting area. He loved grey and subdued colours, a mood influencing on an observer imagination and melancholic atmosphere. Sometimes he used to light up the subdued colours with single reflections of the sun or bright colour spot or some detail in a small part of the nature. In 1892, on the yearly exhibition in Vienna his paintings were bought by Franz Joseph, who was also responsible for engaging Kochanowski in the monumental publishing house - „Die Österreichisch-Ungarische Monarchie in Wort und Bild”. To the volume related to Galicia he drew 15 drawings. Many Times he has wanted to come back to the home city and permanently stay in Poland. However finally personal and material reasons prevented him from doing this. In 1933, after Hitler had come to power, he was prohibited from painting and exhibiting his works in Germany. He died in 1945, just after the War had ended. He was buried together with his wife on the cemetery Waldfriedhof in Munich. In 2007 there was the 150th anniversary of his birthday. Because of this fact two independent exhibitions documenting his life and his works were arranged: Regional Museum in Suwałki and Museum of the name of Jacek Malczewski in Radom. Both were arranged on the basis of private collections Barbara Lewkowicz-Odojewska , the successor of Roman Kochanowski. Thanks to the Mrs Barbara and in cooperation with these museums, seizing and opportunity that this great collection is in Poland our museum will show a part of this collection. It is worth of mentioning that Kochanowski didn’t live to see an individual exhibition of his works in Kraków and this is the first time when the works are presented in here.
