Opening of the exhibition on April 8th 2009 at 17.00, in the Krzysztofory Palace, Rynek Główny 35 (35 Main Square). Year 2009 brings 100th anniversary of Helena Modrzejewska death (1840–1909). Because of that fact our museum decided to prepare an exhibition introducing excellent actress of Polish and American scenes. Main purpose of the exhibition is to remind a character of the artist, who thanks to her talent and hard work, overcoming language barriers, won a fame and recognition of critics on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. We would like to present places where she was growing up and her theatre lifetime. She has created many magnificent theatre roles. All of them have been performed with all her heart, for the love of art, with a passion of creating and a passion of life, curiosity about others, consequences of her activities and creativity. Unfortunately this genre of art is too transitory to entirely retain it however some part of her art survived on photographs, portraits, write-ups and memories of people living those days. A hundred years after she died, this is a pleasure for us to remind you of, and rediscover for current generations a figure of Helena Modrzejewska – a woman and actress. The exhibition includes over 300 objects related to Modrzejewska. Among them there are mainly pictures, paintings and graphics of Modrzejewska. Among these, the most numerous and the most important group are photographs of Modrzejewska wearing stage costumes. The second section has been dedicated to designs and pictures of prepared by her stage costumes. On the exhibition you will find documents, theatre posters and keepsakes as well. Apart from objects directly related to the actress we present portraits and photographs of people who have accompanied Modrzejewska in her personal and professional lives. There are also paintings of the 19th century’s Kraków showing atmosphere of the city she used to grow up and start her career in. The exhibition has been split into 4 sections: I. Kraków in the 19th century from the memories of Helena Modrzejewska II. Helena Modrzejewska in the theatrical environment on Kraków (1865–1869) III. Career of Helena Modrzejewska: Warsaw – America – London –Kraków (1869–1903) IV. Collection of Modrzejewska keepsakes, (from the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana collection). Additionally the exhibition includes a multimedia presentation made by artistic designers of the exposition. The presentation mainly includes pictures of Helena Modrzejewska, also these which are not presented on the exhibition. While doing sightseeing you will listen to a lector reading fragments of Modrzejewska’s diary and some of her letters. We would like to thank all organizations who have rent us exhibits on this jubilee exhibition: Theatrical Museum in Warsaw, National Museum in Warsaw, National Museum in Kraków, Jagiellonian University Library, National Registry in Kraków, Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Kraków. A part of the exhibition showing objects from the collection of Bowers Museum in Santa Ana in California is very interesting one. Thanks to the head of the museum – Peter Keller this is the first time when the exhibits can be seen in Poland. Most of the objects from the Bowers Museum collection come from the Modrzejewska’s beloved Arden Among almost one hundred keepsakes from the times when Modrzejewska was in USA, there are many objects from Poland she had taken with her to America. Very valuable object in this collection is a painting by Józef Chełmoński titled “Sielanka” (“Idyll”), given to her by the author on her wedding with Karol Chłapowski. The exhibition will be moved to the Theatre Museum in the Great Theatre – National Opera (Opera Narodowa) in Warsaw.
