| Patrons and Saints of Kraków and the Little Poland region. Resurgence of the figural embroidery craft. Opening of the exhibition – March 4th, 2009 at 17.00 in the Hipolit House. Welcome to the Hipolit House on the exhibition titled “Patrons and Saints of Kraków and the Little Poland. Resurgence of the figural embroidery craft.” The exhibition was arranged in cooperation with Christian Sacred Art Makers Association – “Ecclesia”, which works under the auspices of the Jesuits Order in Kraków. One of the society’s activities is figural embroidery workshop. The classes were established in 2002 by Janina Ziętek, vice director of the ChSTSS. Its purpose is to restore a position of the embroidery which it used to have among other realms of art. The craft of embroidery flowered in the Middle Ages. Even now we can see surviving, (sometimes only in fragments) Paraments, especially ornamental parts of chasubles decorated with true work of art – embroideries showing scenes of the Crucifixion, Holy Virgin or the Prophets. “Painted with a needle”, shaded with colour silks, brightened with shining, golden and silver threads, sometimes with pearls scenes and characters even now are inspiration for artist. Participants of kept by Janina Ziętek workshops, can develop their talents and improve skills. They are making embroidery replicas of famous paintings. Thanks to different embroidery techniques they try to present characteristic for the particular work of art, features of the style. Softly put colourful threads look like painting that which is why, according to the medieval definitions, this technique is called acupicture (“painting with a needle”). Other works, which follow gothic broken style by using different bases, imitate relief and look like “sculpting with a needle”. That is why this technique is called acusculpture. On the exhibition you will find pictures of Saints related to our region, as well those who has been worshipped for centuries as those beatified and canonized recently by John Paul II. According to the tradition, embroideries decorate church and guild’s standards. Such examples can also be found on the exhibition. A part of the exhibition is dedicated to the activities of the „Ecclesia” association, and a process of producing embroidered paintings. Please come to the Hipolit House, for a few moments take a break from the hurling world and see amazing works, which besides talent requires time, patience, distinctness and finesse. Welcome!
