Pokonkursowa Wystawa Szopek Krakowskich
| Contest exhibition of the Kraków Nativity Scenes | ||||
We would like to invite you for contest exhibition of the Kraków Nativity Scenes in the Krzysztofor Palace. Kraków Nativity Scenes its beauty and unusual form owe to the Kraków’s architecture. Cribs makers look for an inspiration in the inexhaustible repository of historic monuments which Kraków is. Even unskilful eye will see the St. Mary’s Church Towers or cupola of the Sigismund Chapel. Recently the cribs makers used to refer to the secular architecture. That is why in the cribs we can find the Barbican, the Town Hall Tower, the City Defence Walls with the St. Florian’s Gate, or the Drapers' Hall. Because of this fact, even though the cribs are mythical and fantastical they seem to be very close and familiar. Each year, on the first Thursday of December, cribs makers with created by them works of art arrive to the Kraków’s Main Square in the morning. Among the cribs there huge ones, even 3 meters long, but also very small, merely a couple centimetre high. Because of the fact that this is open competition everyone, irrespective of age, education or place of residence can take part in it. Therefore, each year, beside Christmas cribs of great masters and repeated winners of this competition, there are cribs made by youth and children. At noon, all the cribs makers, with the colourful procession go the Krzysztofory Palace – the Museum’s Headquarter and deposit their cribs. Even the same day, about 2:00 pm, the jury start a debate. Three days later, on Sunday the Museum’s director solemnly gives the competition’s results and opens the post-competition, Kraków’s Christmas Cribs exhibition.
